Railway Day Trips

Railway Day Trips

There’s nothing quite like a nostalgic train journey as you’re whisked through some of the country’s most exquisite rolling countryside, past picturesque villages, wooded valleys, farmland and sleepy unseen corners to evoke memories of a bygone age. And it’s not just a day out for railway enthusiasts; our day trips cover beautiful parts of the UK and many are combined with relaxing attractions, or lunch and cream tea. Take your pick from traversing through the heart of Hampshire, through one of England’s finest landscapes – the High Weald, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or to the quaint Cotswolds scenery…

Mid Hants Railway (Watercress Line) including Ploughman’s Lunch and Jane Austen’s House Museum, Hampshire – Thursday 8th June
Includes a 90-minute steam train journey through the heart of Hampshire from Alresford to Alton and return where a cheese ploughman’s lunch will be served on board. You will then travel by coach and visit the 17th century house where Jane Austen lived from 1809 to 1871; 2017 marks the 200th anniversary of her death. Here she wrote and revised her 6 novels, including Pride and Prejudice and Emma.

Borde Hill Garden and The Bluebell Railway – Tuesday 4 July
Take a ride on the Bluebell Railway from East Grinstead and return and experience the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Steaming through the countryside you will see wooded valleys, streams and rivers, and meadows with wild flowers. In the afternoon we will visit Borde Hill Garden in Haywards Heath, renowned for its rare shrubs and champion trees, offering an enjoyable day out for horticultural enthusiasts. The Edwardian Garden was created by Colonel Stephenson Robert Clarke in the early 1900s, and today is still lovingly cared for and continues to be developed by generations of the same family. The garden is home to a series of intimate and enchanting ‘garden rooms’, with the Green Tree Gallery, plant sales and gift shop.
