Autumnal Lakes - Keswick
Glorious gold, fiery reds, bronzing oranges and brilliant yellows; the Lake District becomes a blaze of colour in autumn as the leaves turn. Autumn in the Lake District is a beautiful time of the year to visit.
At the heart of the Northern Lakes, is the warm and vibrant market town of Keswick. The Keswick Country House Hotel is our elegant home from where we begin our exploration of the many beautiful, picture postcard villages and towns that are set amidst stunning mountain and lakeside scenery. Enlighten your knowledge of the area by visiting the revamped Keswick Museum or the Pencil Museum. Heading the list is a possible cruise on Dewent Water, known as the ‘Queen of the Lakes’ with beautiful walks, long or short beside the lake. If walking is your forte, you will not be disappointed! The mountains surrounding Keswick are just the place for your next adventure, whether you want to climb the highest peaks or search out the best views and most interesting routes.
With so much to see and enjoy, your visit to the magnificent Lake District will be a holiday you will never forget.
Day 1 - Departure: 0700–0830 hrs. We travel to the Lake District making relevant comfort stops and lunch breaks en-route (lunch not included). Check in to the hotel, maybe take a stroll before your evening meal. Dinner is included for the next 3 nights.
Day 2 - After breakfast, we head to Ullswater, the second largest lake in the Lake District. Teeming with natural beauty, this tranquil area is blessed with lakeside beaches, lush green fields and woodlands, gentle footpaths and stunning mountain scenery. Continue our journey via Glenridding, Brothers Water, the Kirkstone Pass, the Lake District’s highest pass that is open to motor traffic with an altitude of 1,489 feet, leading down to Bowness-on-Windermere, one of Cumbria’s most popular destinations located by Lake Windermere. The beautiful town was once a regular haunt of William Wordsworth, one of the ‘Lake Poets’ along with Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Robert Southey who also lived in the Lake District. Today you’ll be drawn to the location for its beautiful lake, Victorian and Edwardian buildings, and its relaxing atmosphere. You may wish to take an optional cruise on Lake Windermere and enjoy the peace and beautiful surroundings or maybe take a visit to the Beatrix Potter Museum. Free time for lunch (lunch not included). Return to Keswick via Kendal, Shap and Pooley Bridge.
Day 3 - After breakfast we travel via St Johns Vale, a glacial valley, which lies under the craggy slopes of the Helvellyn Range with splendid views towards Blencathra. Our next point of interest will be Ambleside, a bustling resort with Victorian roots, once associated with Beatrix Potter. Continue on to Grasmere (lunch stop – lunch not included), a tiny village which has been an inspirational landscape for hundreds of years, and where William Wordsworth’s former home lies, Dove Cottage. You’ll find plenty of tearooms to choose from, or perhaps take a visit to the famous Sarah Nelson Gingerbread Shop to buy the renowned Grasmere Gingerbread. From here we will return to Keswick and the afternoon is free for you to enjoy.
Day 4 – We depart after breakfast and with our last drive through the Lakes, we begin our journey homewards. We make relevant comfort and lunch stops en-route (lunch not included). Arrive home: mid-evening.
