York, Whitby, North Yorkshire Moors

Indulge yourself with a break away to a northern star, the striking City of York. Once behind the wall, feel the lure of the cathedral city's old-fashioned charm, bustling shops and restaurants. York is renowned for its Roman, Viking and Medieval heritage. You will want to explore the great array of intriguing attractions such as the mighty York Minster, one of the world’s most famous cathedrals. The iconic JORVIK Viking Centre or the York Castle Museum may entice you. Be captivated and bewitched as you meander through the charming Tudor buildings and cobbled streets of The Shambles. This ancient city offers tempting specialist craft shops, stylish boutiques, quality antique shops and book dealers. In the evenings, you can enjoy some local culture whilst you down your tipple. Head over to the wonderfully named Trembling Madness pub and behold its medieval hall, which started out life as a Norman house in 1180AD. Failing that, there’s always the Roman Bath pub, which – wait for it – has real Roman baths in the basement!

Day 1 - Departure: 0800 – 0930 hrs. Travel north, making a lunch stop en-route (lunch not included). Hotel check-in and the afternoon at your leisure. Dinner is included for the next 3 nights.
Day 2 - Set behind ancient city walls, the traffic-free, centre of York is an ideal place to visit. The day includes admission to the Castle Museum, housed in 18th century prison buildings, where you will walk through lifelike replicas of Victorian and Edwardian streets, and step back in time and get a flavour of what life was really like in the original cells, and see some of the most infamous criminals brought to life. You may wish to delve into the city’s vibrant café culture, enjoy lunch at one of the many varied eateries. Maybe take a peaceful guided boat trip along the River Ouse, visit the popular National Railway Museum (free admission) or The York Minster Cathedral and take in 2000 years of history in stunning surroundings. The new, York Minster Revealed Experience is an immersive and interactive journey through to Millenia of York’s history, featuring artefacts never before on public display.
Day 3 - We travel to Whitby via the dramatic North Yorkshire Moors with sweeping landscapes of stunning heather clad moorland and pretty villages. This is ‘Heartbeat Country’; dominated by the cliff-top ruins of the beautiful 13th century Whitby Abbey. Whitby is a traditional maritime town with a maze of cobbled streets and alleyways, where you can mosey past picturesque houses, down to the busy quayside and blue flag sandy beach. Looming 199 steps above the old town, stands St Mary’s Church, a fine example of Anglo Saxon architecture, whose graveyard was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula.  You may wish to visit attractions such as the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, Victorian Jet Works, the Dracula Experience, Whitby Museum and of course Whitby’s world-famous fish & chips.
